Head Refacing Lapping Valves and Engine Strip Down
Its been a while since i last posted by progress on my CA18DET build, it has been coming along quite smoothly, the head was sent away to a local engineering company to get the head refaced just to make sure everything is flat in anticipation for the metal head gasket. Once the head was back i started lapping in the valves.
By using a special tool and paste i began to grind the valved into the head, making sure i chose the correct valve for the hole. I added 4-5 bits of paste to the valve and inserted it into the head. I added the special tool with the sucker onto the valve and began to rotate the valve so the paste began to cut into the head, every now and again i would lift the valve and tap it on the head to get the paste back into the contact points. I used this style seen in this video below
As you can see it is quite time consuming and took me overall about 3-4 hours todo all 16 valves. By this time i had no skin left on my hands so i suggest doing a couple at the time. What you are looking for is a consistant dull line around the valve angle, sometimes this requires repeating the process a couple of times for each of the valves.
Last week my engine arrived, i started to strip down all the parts so i can clean and reasemble. Some good points though the cambelt looked brand new and the bottom engine was in great condition. It will need a good clean and painting however. To make this engine a 2 liter im going to have to bore the piston bores 1mm oversize to be able to fit my new 8:1 Compression CP Pistons which are looking very shiny in there box. So the block will have to be sent off to my local machine shop again for a bore and refacing.
