Mazda Motor Corporation today announced that it has built the first Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE vehicle with Norwegian specifications, developed specifically for participation in HyNor, Norway’s national hydrogen project. The first unit will take part in ceremonies marking the official opening of HyNor’s hydrogen filling stations. The initial opening ceremony will be held in Oslo on May 11, 2009. The RX-8 Hydrogen RE will then undergo certification to meet local standards and will be used for maintenance staff training. Mazda plans to commence leasing of Norwegian specification RX-8 Hydrogen RE models in Norway in summer 2009.

Unlike the RX-8 Hydrogen RE currently being leased in Japan, the HyNor-specification Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE is based on the latest European-specification Mazda RX-8 with left-hand drive and a manual transmission.

The HyNor project aims to enable hydrogen vehicles to travel along a 580-kilometer stretch of highway by establishing a chain of hydrogen stations between Stavanger and Oslo in Norway. Mazda agreed to collaborate with HyNor on the project in November 2007 and began validation of the RX-8 Hydrogen RE’s driving performance on Norwegian public roads in October 2008.

You can count on private tuners to remind us of just how exciting Mitsubishi’s cars can be. Especially that thing they call the Evolution. UK-based tuning blokes, MML Sports, has come out with a little something something for the 2009 World Rally Championship (WRC) season.

Essentially a Mitsubishi Evolution X RS under the sheet metal, MML’s Group N-spec Evo adds a custom made roll-cage and enlarged fuel tank. Also slapped on are some BOS dampers, upgraded springs and modified gearing for improved ride. Because WRC’s Group N rules prohibit tweaks to suspension geometry and engine, a MOTEC ECU has been employed to get every possible bit of performance out of the turbocharged 4B11 four-cylinder.

We've heard about the Nissan GT-R's transmission trouble, but how much abuse will the engine take? Not a 150 shot of NOS on top of 600 wheel HP, that's for sure.

Samurai Speed already found the limits of its transmission, blowing that when they attempted a modified-engine, launch control-on, drag start. Now it appears they've found the limits of the engine: 600 HP at the wheels plus an extra 150 HP worth of Nitrous.

What's next for the GT-R-destroying tuner? All forged internals and 1000 HP. We'll see how long that engine holds together.

The world economy’s taking a real toll on car makers and customers alike. And autoshows are caught right in the middle of the crunch.

With sales declining and calls to cut costs increasing, Honda has decided to cancel its appearance at september’s Frankfurt auto show. “Due to the unprecedented market downturn, Honda has come to a conclusion that the company will have to skip its participation to the Frankfurt motor show this year,” the company said in a statement.

Honda has also resorted to dropping out of the F1 circuit as it tries to handle the tough economic conditions of today. I hope the cost cutting’s going to be temporary.
